Competitive games brief description

Hi guys, here are some brief decription of the competitive games.

There will also be an on-spot competition open to members of public on event date(Pictionary-Singapore Edition)

MONOPOLY

It is most played commercial board game worldwide with approximately 750 million people have played the game, one which many in Singapore are also familiar with. The event relies on Monopoly’s popularity to promote the board gaming culture. It is a game with the aim of dominating the market. The more properties you will have, mainly real estates, the more chance of winning. The players can learn how to invest and how to use their money well. Even if they lose, they learn through their mistakes. Monopoly also develops strategic thinking along with the economics of monopoly and identification of investments opportunities.

The SETTLERS OF CATAN

Settlers was the first German-style board game to achieve popularity outside Europe, and has been called the killer app of designer board games. Over 15 million games in the Catan series have been sold, and the game has been translated into thirty languages from the original German. The game has rapidly become popular in part because its mechanics are relatively simple, while its dynamics are quite complex. The game is well suited for family play, since no one gets eliminated, and players who are behind can strive towards goals that are within their reach. It helps players to learn new words and definitions, improve memory and enhance language skills. Exercise mind muscles for long-term learning and retention. Its relative simple rules also make first-timers easy to grasp.

DIVIDENDS

The game allows players to make their fortune on the volatile stock market through stock buying to earn dividend payouts or selling for profits. The key to success in this game lies in a player’s ability to make the most money from each stock purchase (maximizing return on investment) while taking into consideration the effects of supply and demand on stock prices (market economics). While being the first-mover confers tremendous advantage, exercising major shareholder influence on dividend payouts can perhaps give a player the added edge towards financial victory. This game’s similarity to real life gives youth a brief perspective on stocks investing, serving as a stepping platform for further learning of financial literacy.

BLOKUS

Blokus is an abstract strategy board game for two to four players, invented by Bernard Tavitian (an engineer and artist) and first released in 2000. It has since won several awards, including the Mensa Select award and the 2004 Teacher's Choice Award. The game puts the ultimate test on ones spatial reasoning abilities, even for young children. The high replay value of this game makes it a popular purchase and even some schools have bought it in order to increase the spatial relation capabilities of their students. It stimulates players’ minds in strategic thinking and creative placement of the pieces when playing against the others. Its simplicity makes it easy for everyone to learn the game play. Blokus is as addicting as it is so easy to play, yet it makes the player thinks very hard.
